Buying it, and when not to

The TM5 is a 2.5G GPON OLT SFP C++ SC optical transceiver. It is the module that goes into a PON port on the OLT, and without one that port cannot light a single fibre. It is consumable infrastructure, not an upgrade.

Buy one per PON port you intend to put into service, plus spares. The C++ class matters on long or heavily split trees where the optical budget is tight - it is what keeps the last customer on a splitter within receive range instead of borderline. Keeping spares in the office is not optional: a failed transceiver takes a whole splitter tree down, and that is dozens of subscribers waiting on you finding a replacement in the market.

There is nobody who should buy a different product instead - if you have an OLT, you need these. What matters is matching them to the port and the tree. Confirm the SFP type your OLT expects and the split ratio and distance of the run before ordering, because an under-specified transceiver on an over-split tree produces exactly the kind of intermittent fault that takes days to find. At one hundred and twenty to a carton, this is a line to buy properly rather than one at a time.
