Buying it, and when not to
The G500-F is a 2.5G cloud-managed VPN router. Two things in that description earn the price. The 2.5G interface means the box is not the ceiling on a connection that has outgrown gigabit. The VPN and cloud management mean you can link sites together and change a configuration without driving to the building.
This is the router for a customer with more than one location - a head office and two branches, a warehouse and a showroom, a chain of shops that all need to reach the same server. It is also the right answer when you, the installer, are the one who will be supporting the network for years: remote management turns a two-hour Lagos round trip into a five-minute change.
It is overkill for a single-site shop or a house, where an AC10 or a G0 PoE gateway does everything needed for a fraction of the money. It also carries no PoE, so a site with ceiling access points and cameras still needs a PoE switch behind it - budget for a TEG1110PF or TEG1120P in the same quote rather than discovering it on installation day. If the requirement is enterprise WiFi rather than routing between sites, the W30E is the closer fit.
